Folk Be Migratin’
August 02, 2010 - 06:08 PM
So we've moved the Folk / Celtic / Maritimes section. It's now where Jazz new arrivals used to be--on the wall between Reggae and World. We did it for a few reasons, most of which are pretty obvious considering Folk used to be sandwiched betwixt New Arrivals and New Arrivals.

To commemorate the move, here's a few tracks of what I consider some of the best little-known contemporary folkies or folk-influenced players:

The Tallest Man on Earth - "I Won't Be Found" from Shallow Grave
Marissa Nadler - "Thinking of You" from Songs III: Bird on the Water
Devendra Banhart - "A Sight to Behold" from Rejoicing in the Hands
M Ward - "Carolina" from End of Amnesia
Nina Nastasia - "Our Day Trip" from On Leaving
Langhorne Slim - "Lord" from Electric Love Letter
Espers - "Byss & Abyss" from Espers
Wooden Wand - "Leave Your Perch..." from Harem Of The Sundrum & The Witness Figg
Simon Joyner - "Parachute" from Songs for the New Year
Chriss Sutherland - "Fadin' Out" from Me In a "Field"
Turner Cody - "Up Up High" from Buds of May
Songs: Ohia - "Love Leaves Its Abusers" from a live show in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 12, 1999. (The entire show is here in Flac format, along with a huge archive of singer-songwriter Jason Molina's work.)

And a video from Bonnie "Prince" Billy, who doesn't need any help from me:

See? It doesn't all have to be Fairport Convention.
